Incidents in exotic keeping do not peak in midsummer or midwinter. They peak in the two weeks when the season turns — room temperature starts moving while your equipment is still configured for the season just gone.
This covers both directions.
1. First, which way does your species fail?
Heat-vulnerable — summer is the dangerous season

Cold-vulnerable — winter needs extra investment
- All reptiles: inadequate warmth causes digestive stasis and respiratory infection directly
- Syrian hamsters: below 15 °C they enter a dangerous torpor
- Aquatic turtles: sudden water temperature drops cause pneumonia
Note: for the chinchilla and the axolotl, this is not “try to keep it cool”. It is do not keep this species without a cooling plan.
2. Summer: three cooling approaches
Approach one: air conditioning (most reliable)
Controls the whole room, stable and with no blind spots. The downside is the electricity bill.
For chinchillas and axolotls, this is effectively the only dependable option. If you plan to switch the AC off whenever you leave the house, these two species are not for you.
Approach two: an aquarium chiller (aquatic only)
Precise temperature control for an axolotl tank. Higher upfront cost, but cheaper to run than air conditioning and independent of room temperature.
Approach three: physical cooling (supplementary)
- Ceramic or marble tiles for a chinchilla to lie on, with spares rotating through the fridge
- Aquarium cooling fans — evaporative, worth 2-3 °C, but accelerate evaporation so top up water
- Frozen water bottles wrapped in a towel outside the cage, for emergencies
- Keep out of direct sun — draw curtains, and never site an enclosure against a window
❌ Do not: pour water directly on the animal (chinchillas must never get wet), drop ice into a tank (the sudden drop is its own hazard), or aim a fan directly at a small mammal.
3. Winter: what actually matters
The core principle: do not let the thermal gradient collapse.
The usual winter problem is not that the warm end is too cool. It is that the cool end has become far too cold, so the animal can no longer move usefully between the two.
In practice:
- Raising the room temperature is more effective than simply increasing heater wattage
- Check whether the enclosure sits near a window or a draughty door, and move it if so
- Monitor overnight temperatures too — many problems occur in the small hours
- Use a ceramic heat emitter to raise air temperature (no light, so the day-night cycle is undisturbed)
- Protect turtle and axolotl tanks against water temperature tracking a falling room
On brumation:
Hermann’s tortoises and bearded dragons brumate in the wild, but it is not required in captivity.
Brumation needs a prior health check, adequate weight, gradual cooling and monitoring throughout, and done badly it kills. In your first year, overwinter warm and revisit the question once you have experience.
4. The changeover fortnight
The highest-risk window, for a simple reason: the room is changing and your settings are not.
Late spring (warming) checklist:
- Is the thermostat still set to its winter value?
- Does the daytime peak now exceed your species’ ceiling?
- Do the cooling systems — AC, chiller, fans — actually work? Test before it gets hot, not during.
- Have heat-sensitive animals been moved out of the sun’s new path?
Late autumn (cooling) checklist:
- Has the overnight minimum dropped below the floor?
- Is the heating working, and has the thermostat probe shifted position?
- Has the cool end become genuinely too cold?
- Is water temperature tracking the falling room temperature?
A suggestion: set two calendar reminders, two weeks before your region typically warms up and cools down, to run these checks.
5. Power-cut contingency
Short outages (a few hours) are survivable for adult animals. Do not panic.
Extended outages:
- Keeping warm: wrap the enclosure in blankets; tape heat packs to the outside with several towels between. Never in direct contact with the animal
- Keeping cool: towel-wrapped frozen bottles beside the enclosure; move the animal to the coolest room in the house, usually a north-facing bathroom
- Aquatic: a battery air pump to maintain oxygen matters more urgently than temperature
Keep on hand: heat packs, an insulated bag or polystyrene box, and a battery air pump. Together they cost very little.
6. Before you leave the house
In summer, before going out — even for a normal working day:
- Is the air conditioning set to run continuously rather than on a timer that switches off?
- Will the sun move onto a heat-sensitive animal’s enclosure during the day?
- Going away for more than a day? See travelling and being away
Every summer, animals die because someone thought they were only going out for a few hours. For a chinchilla or an axolotl, one hot afternoon is enough.
