The large majority of accidents in reptile keeping are temperature-related β and nearly all of them are prevented by a thermostat that costs very little.
This covers choosing heat sources and wiring them correctly.
1. First rule: every heat source runs through a thermostat
A heat mat plugged straight into the wall easily exceeds 50 Β°C at the surface.
What makes that worse is that many reptiles respond poorly to heat on the belly β the animal lies on it without registering danger, and by the time you notice there is extensive burn damage. This is the leading cause of beginner accidents, and it is entirely avoidable.
A thermostat is not an accessory. It is a required component of the heating system. Do not economise here.
2. Four heat sources and where each fits

Choosing:
- Nocturnal species (geckos, ball pythons) β heat mat as the base, ceramic emitter if you need more. Never a lamp that emits light
- Diurnal baskers (bearded dragons, tortoises) β a basking lamp is mandatory for the hot spot; a heat mat cannot substitute
- Amphibians β small heat mat on a side wall; in many homes room temperature is enough
- Aquatic (axolotls) β the usual need is cooling, not heating
3. The thermostat probe: placement decides everything
This is the step most often done wrong, and the one with the worst consequences.
The probe goes where the animal actually makes contact:

- β Correct: probe on the substrate surface directly above the heat mat
- β Probe dangling in air β reads several degrees below the contact surface, so the thermostat is effectively bypassed
- β Probe tucked under the mat β reads high, so the thermostat cuts out early and the enclosure never gets warm enough
- β Probe inside a hide β reads a local microclimate that says nothing about the rest of the enclosure
With a basking lamp, put the probe near but not directly under the beam, and separately measure the basking stoneβs surface temperature with an infrared gun.
4. Mechanical versus digital thermostats
Mechanical (dial)
- Cheap, but imprecise β swings of Β±3-5 Β°C are common
- Acceptable as a minimum on a tight budget, and vastly better than none
Digital
- Accurate, usually within Β±1 Β°C
- Most support separate day and night setpoints
- The recommended choice
Dimming thermostats
- For basking lamps: they modulate power rather than switching on and off, giving smoother temperatures
- Note that ceramic emitters and most LEDs cannot be used with dimming thermostats β confirm compatibility before buying
5. Do not trust built-in displays
Stick-on dial thermometers and the digital readout on a heat mat controller are typically well off, and they measure a spot you do not care about.
Get an infrared temperature gun. It reads surface temperature, costs very little, and tells you directly:
- What the warm-side substrate surface is actually doing
- Whether the cool side really is cooler
- The real temperature of the basking stone
- Whether the mat has a local hot spot
Once everything is installed, run the enclosure empty for 3-7 days, measuring warm and cool sides morning and evening and writing it down. This catches nearly every problem before an animal is exposed to it.
6. Safety checklist
- Always use a thermostat, no exceptions
- Heat only part of the floor β full coverage destroys the thermal gradient
- Keep the mat outside the enclosure, on the underside or an outer wall, not somewhere the animal stands on it directly
- Guard every lamp so the animal cannot touch the bulb
- Match ceramic emitter wattage to enclosure size β an oversized emitter in a small enclosure bakes the humidity out
- Inspect cables periodically β ageing mats can develop hot spots
- Plan for both power loss and overheating: most digital thermostats have a high-temperature alarm, so enable it
7. Common questions
βIt never gets warm enough.β Before increasing wattage, check three things: is the enclosure too large, is there too much ventilation, and is the device sized for the space. Adding power blindly tends to create local hot spots.
βItβs too hot in summer.β Chinchillas, axolotls and crested geckos need cooling rather than heating in summer. Air conditioning is the reliable answer β see summer cooling and winter heating.
βWhat if the power goes out?β Short outages are survivable for adult animals. Keep heat packs and an insulated box as a contingency β taped to the outside of the container with towels in between, never in direct contact with the animal.
