Exotic Pet Enclosure Setup: Heating, Humidity and Substrate

Thermal gradients, wiring a thermostat correctly, holding humidity, choosing substrate and the mistakes that cause most losses. The reasoning behind the numbers, not just the numbers.

Reptiles and amphibians are ectotherms β€” they cannot generate their own body heat, and digestion, immune function and activity all depend on the temperature you provide.

Which means one thing: the enclosure is not decoration, it is a life support system. Get the parameters wrong and the animal does not die immediately β€” it deteriorates slowly, and beginners typically notice months later.

1. Thermal gradient: the thing that matters most

Do not aim to β€œkeep the tank at 28 Β°C”. The goal is a temperature difference across one enclosure so the animal can choose.

The reasoning: after eating, the animal needs the warm end to digest; when resting, it needs to retreat to the cool end. A single-temperature enclosure removes its ability to thermoregulate at all.

In practice:

  1. Cover only one-third to one-half of the floor with heating, at one end
  2. Put a hide at each end so it feels secure at both temperatures
  3. Measure the substrate surface temperature on each side with an infrared gun β€” not air temperature

2. The thermostat is not optional

Every heating device must run through a thermostat. This is the single most important rule in reptile keeping.

A heat mat plugged straight into the wall easily exceeds 50 Β°C at the surface. The animal lying on it does not perceive the danger β€” many reptiles respond poorly to heat on the belly β€” and the result is a burn. This is the leading cause of beginner accidents.

Wiring it:

A cheap mechanical thermostat is imprecise but far better than nothing; a digital one is more stable. This is not the place to economise.

3. Humidity: by species, and by zone

Requirements vary enormously, and what you usually need is localised humidity rather than a uniformly damp enclosure:

The humid hide is badly underrated: a plastic tub with a small entrance, packed with damp sphagnum, placed between the warm and cool ends. A gecko will take itself in there to shed. Without it, skin is retained on the toe tips and eventually constricts them off.

Chronically excessive humidity is equally dangerous β€” arid species in a damp enclosure develop respiratory and fungal infections readily. Consider ventilation and humidity together.

4. Substrate: safety before appearance

For your first setup, just use paper towel. It looks like nothing, but you can see every dropping, which means you spot problems on day one. Move to something more attractive once the husbandry is stable.

5. UVB: when, and how

The most commonly missed point: a lit UVB tube is not necessarily emitting UVB. Output decays over time, and tubes must be replaced every 6-12 months regardless of whether they still light up. Put a dated label on the tube.

UVB is almost entirely blocked by glass and plastic, so the lamp must shine directly or through purpose-made mesh.

6. Run it empty first

Once everything is installed, do not put the animal in yet.

  1. Run the enclosure empty for 3-7 days
  2. Measure warm-side and cool-side substrate surface temperature plus humidity, morning and evening
  3. Write the readings down and confirm the day-night swing is acceptable
  4. Only then collect the animal

This step catches nearly every equipment problem before an animal is exposed to it.

Common mistakes at a glance
