Bioactive Vivarium Basics: Layers, Cleanup Crew and Plants

Drainage layer, substrate barrier and soil mix, what springtails and isopods are actually doing, choosing plants, and which species a bioactive build genuinely suits.

The point of a bioactive vivarium is not that it looks good. It is that microbes and small invertebrates in the substrate break down waste themselves, producing a largely self-sustaining system.

Done right, you rarely change substrate and humidity holds steadier. Done wrong, you have a tank of mouldy soil.

1. First: does your species suit one?

A practical suggestion: in your first year, keep the animal on paper towel and get the husbandry stable. Consider a bioactive build in year two. Do not let the scenery get in the way of reading the animal’s condition.

β‘  Drainage layer β€” LECA clay balls or lava rock, 3-5 cm. Excess water sinks here so the soil never sits waterlogged, which would rot roots and turn anaerobic.

β‘‘ Substrate barrier β€” mesh or purpose-made fabric, stopping soil from filling the drainage layer.

β‘’ Substrate mix β€” ABG mix (bark, tree fern, peat moss, charcoal, vermiculite) is the standard, or blend your own from coco coir, bark and charcoal. The essential quality is that it stays loose and aerated, never compacted.

β‘£ Leaf litter β€” treated oak or magnolia leaves. This layer is not decoration; it is the cleanup crew’s food and habitat, and it is central to holding humidity.

3. The cleanup crew is the system

Springtails break down mould and organic matter, and are the main defence against mould. Their population self-regulates.

Isopods process leaf litter and faeces. Start with a hardy beginner species tolerant of a wide humidity range.

When to add them: build the vivarium, add the cleanup crew, and let it run for 4-6 weeks before the animal goes in. That window lets the microfauna establish β€” put an animal in immediately and the crew gets eaten or buried in waste before it can build numbers.

They are also food: for small amphibians like dart frogs, springtails are a meaningful supplementary food source in their own right.

4. Choosing plants

Hardy, shade- and humidity-tolerant starters:

Avoid:

Treat every plant before it goes in. Most nursery plants carry pesticide residue. Rinse the roots thoroughly, discard the original soil, and quarantine for two weeks before adding. This matters most for amphibians.

5. Lighting and ventilation

Plants need light, which brings two side effects:

  1. Heat β€” LED plant lights still produce heat. Measure inside the enclosure after installing. This is the most commonly missed heat source in planted builds, and for a heat-sensitive species like the dart frog (28 Β°C ceiling) it can be fatal
  2. Disturbance for nocturnal animals β€” nocturnal species need generous shaded retreats

Ventilation matters just as much. High humidity plus poor airflow equals mould and respiratory infection. Leave vents at the top or front, and add a small fan if needed.

6. Routine maintenance

Bioactive is not zero-maintenance, just differently maintained:

What if it moulds? White fuzz in the early weeks is normal and recedes once springtail numbers build. If it keeps spreading, the cause is usually inadequate ventilation or too much organic matter.
