Beginners tend to go to one of two extremes with supplements: none at all, or heavy dosing every day.
Both cause problems. Here is what to give, when, and how much.
1. Why supplementation is necessary at all
In the wild these animals eat a wide range of insects and plants, and occasionally bone or soil. In captivity the diet is narrow, which produces two specific problems.
Problem one: feeder insects have the wrong calcium-to-phosphorus ratio
Insects are generally high in phosphorus and low in calcium. Excess phosphorus blocks calcium uptake β meaning that even calcium-containing food will not prevent deficiency if phosphorus is too high.
The target ratio is around 2:1, while crickets sit near 1:9 and mealworms are worse. So dusting is not a nice extra; it is correcting a diet that is unbalanced by default.
Problem two: without UVB, calcium cannot be used
Vitamin D3 is the switch that enables calcium absorption. Diurnal species synthesise their own from UVB; species without UVB must get it from food.
Which brings us to the two types of calcium powder.

The key difference: D3 synthesised from UVB is self-limiting β the animal simply stops producing it once it has enough. Oral D3 has no such brake, and chronic excess causes soft tissue calcification and kidney damage.
In practice:
- Keep both. Use the plain calcium routinely and alternate in the D3 version
- For species with UVB, cut D3 dosing sharply or drop it entirely
- If you can, add a multivitamin powder used once a week
3. Frequency guidelines
Species pages carry the specifics; this is the general framework:

Breeding females have the highest requirement β egg production drains calcium reserves fast, and deficiency leads directly to egg binding.
4. How to dust
- Put the feeders in a small bag or a cup with a lid
- Add a small amount of powder β you want a light coating, not a white shell
- Shake gently for about ten seconds
- Feed immediately β insects shed the powder within minutes
Common mistakes:
- Coating too heavily β animals may refuse the food, and it invites overdose
- Dusting and then leaving them β the powder falls off and the step achieves nothing

Tortoises and herbivores work differently: sprinkle calcium on greens, or simply leave a cuttlebone in the enclosure permanently. Self-selection is closer to natural and much harder to overdo.
5. What oversupplementation does
Excess calcium is relatively uncommon but interferes with absorption of other minerals, particularly phosphorus and zinc.
Excess vitamin D3 is the one to watch. It presents as reduced appetite, lethargy, and increased drinking and urination, and chronically causes irreversible kidney and soft tissue calcification. The usual cause is continuing heavy D3 supplementation for an animal that also has UVB.
Excess vitamin A can cause skin sloughing and shedding problems. Distinguish the two forms: beta-carotene (plant-derived) carries little overdose risk, while preformed vitamin A (retinol, animal-derived) carries much more.
Vitamin A deficiency is also common, particularly in dart frogs and aquatic turtles. It shows as inaccurate strikes at prey, abnormal tongue function and swollen eyelids.
One principle: steady dosing at the standard frequency beats remembering occasionally and overcompensating.
6. Storing supplements
Regularly overlooked, and it directly determines whether any of this works:
- Vitamins oxidise and lose potency over time, especially once damp
- Seal the container after opening and store somewhere cool and dry β not next to the enclosure, where humidity is high
- Use within six months of opening, then replace
- Clumped powder means it has absorbed moisture. Discard it
A tub of degraded vitamin powder produces exactly the same outcome as supplementing nothing β except that you believe you supplemented.
7. Non-reptiles
Guinea pigs need vitamin C, not calcium β they cannot synthesise it. That is a different problem entirely; see feeding herbivorous small pets.
Birds need a permanently available cuttlebone plus grit, with extra calcium for breeding hens to prevent egg binding.
Chinchillas and rabbits run on unlimited hay and generally need no calcium supplement β the concern there is excess calcium causing bladder stones.
