Breeding Basics and Responsibility: Deciding Before You Start

The general prerequisites, the real health risk to the female, where the offspring will go, and why accidental breeding is one of the most common problems in the hobby.

Breeding is the one part of exotic keeping where the right order is “should I” first, “how” second.

Because two of its consequences cannot be undone: the female takes a genuine health risk, and the offspring have to go somewhere.

This guide does not teach breeding for any particular species — that requires dedicated, verified species-specific material. It covers the framework you need before starting.

1. Three questions first

Question one: where do the offspring go?

Clutch and litter sizes are usually larger than expected:

Before you pair anything, you should have answers:

“We’ll figure it out after they hatch” is one of the most common sources of trouble in this hobby. Abandonment and release are not options — nearly all exotics are non-native, and releasing them is both unlawful and ecologically damaging.

Question two: can you carry the risk to the female?

Reproduction is a real physiological cost:

Have the money and the time available, or do not start.

Question three: does the species’ legal status permit it?

For regulated species (CITES-listed, nationally protected), breeding and disposing of offspring may require additional permits.

For Appendix II animals like ball pythons, tortoises and dart frogs, consult your wildlife authority before breeding. See which exotic pets are legal.

2. Universal prerequisites

Whatever the species, these hold:

1. Parents must be healthy and of adequate age and weight

2. Known provenance, avoiding inbreeding

Inbreeding accumulates genetic defects. Keep lineage information from purchase, particularly for animals from the same breeder.

3. Some morph combinations carry lethal genes

Beginners frequently do not know this. Certain appearance morphs, when homozygous, produce severe defects or death — this affects specific combinations in several snakes and geckos. Research the genetics before pairing any morph.

4. The setup must support the whole cycle

A breeding cycle typically needs: a temperature cycle (some species require a cooling period as a trigger), a laying or nesting site, incubation equipment (reptiles), and separate housing for the young.

Space for the offspring is the most underestimated part — a clutch of 15 snakes means 15 individual tubs.

3. Preventing accidental breeding

More common than deliberate breeding, and more troublesome.

The reliable answer: keep same-sex groups.

Birds: remove the nest box.

Lovebirds and zebra finches will lay persistently if there is a nest box or any enclosed cavity in the cage. If you are not breeding, do not provide one. Alongside that:

Chronic egg laying is a genuine health threat — repeated infertile clutches cause severe calcium depletion and exhaustion, and can end in fatal egg binding.

Small mammals: fancy rat gestation is 21 days, so a week of mixed-sex housing can settle the matter. Confirm sex before buying and again afterwards.

4. If you decide to go ahead

This is not a procedure manual. The actual process — cooling cycles, pairing timing, incubation temperature and humidity, temperature-dependent sex determination, getting hatchlings feeding — differs by species, and the details determine the outcome.

Preparing properly means:

  1. Find species-specific breeding material, ideally written by an experienced breeder
  2. Identify a vet in your area who treats the species and can manage dystocia
  3. Set up incubation equipment in advance and run it empty to test
  4. Prepare separate housing and starter food for the young
  5. Settle where the offspring go, with margin for the ones that do not sell

Start with the easiest species. Corn snakes and leopard geckos are the accepted entry points, with abundant documentation and well-established procedures. Do not learn on something difficult.

5. A baseline

Keeping animals without breeding them is always the safer option.

If you simply want more animals, buying captive-bred individuals is far simpler and far lower risk than breeding your own — and it does not produce offspring you cannot place.
