Hamster vs Guinea Pig vs Fancy Rat vs Chinchilla
These four get compared constantly, but they differ far more than they appear to. Lifespans run from two years to twenty, social requirements are exactly inverted between them, and temperature tolerance ranges from relaxed to unforgiving. Work through those three before considering anything else.

Where they actually differ
1 Social needs — exactly inverted
Syrian hamsters must be housed strictly alone; co-housing ends in a fatal fight, with no exceptions. Guinea pigs and fancy rats must be kept in company, and keeping one alone causes ongoing social stress — some countries legislate against it. Chinchillas work either way. Getting this wrong before you buy has fatal consequences.
2 Lifespan range
Hamster 2-3 years, fancy rat 2-3, guinea pig 5-8, chinchilla 10-20. A chinchilla approaches the timescale of keeping a cat, while hamsters and rats leave very quickly — and the rat in particular bonds at close to cat-and-dog intensity, which makes the gap between attachment and loss the sharpest of the four.
3 Temperature demands
The chinchilla is the strictest: never above 25 °C, no air conditioning means do not keep one, and heatstroke is its leading cause of death. Guinea pigs top out at 26 °C, rats and hamsters at 28 °C. If you do not run air conditioning through summer, the chinchilla is out.
4 Space and cage shape
Hamsters need at least 100×50 cm of unbroken floor plus 20 cm of bedding (most commercial cages fall short). Guinea pigs need 0.7-1 m² of floor and do not climb. Fancy rats need a tall wire cage where ventilation is critical. Chinchillas need at least three levels and 100 cm of height, because they move by jumping.
5 Whether you can hold them
Fancy rats are the most affectionate — they climb onto you unprompted, learn their names and pick up simple tricks. Guinea pigs are gentle, rarely bite, and are happy to be held. Hamsters can be handled if you respect their nocturnal schedule. Most chinchillas dislike being picked up and may release fur when frightened.
6 Activity schedule
Guinea pigs are active in the day and are the only one of the four whose schedule matches yours. Hamsters, rats and chinchillas all lean nocturnal — asleep by day, busy at night. If daytime interaction matters, the guinea pig is the only fit.
7 Dietary constraints
Guinea pigs need vitamin C every day (they cannot synthesise it, and rabbit pellets are not a substitute). Chinchillas need unlimited timothy hay and must never have fruit or vegetables. Hamsters and rats are the least demanding.
8 Health risks
Female fancy rats have a high incidence of mammary tumours, common enough to budget for, and mycoplasma respiratory infection is close to universal. Guinea pigs and chinchillas are prone to overgrown teeth and GI stasis. In hamsters, wet tail progresses extremely fast.

Choose the Syrian hamster if…
This is your first small pet, space is limited, you only want one animal, and you accept a 2-3 year span and a nocturnal schedule. They are docile and inexpensive. But the cage must genuinely be large enough (100×50 cm minimum, which most commercial cages are not), and they must never be co-housed.

The coat is remarkable, they are fastidiously clean, and they live a long time. But most do not enjoy being held, so if you want a pet to cuddle this is the wrong choice.
